Her career began at American Baby magazine, where her writing won awards and she was quickly promoted up the ranks from editorial assistant to fashion & merchandise editor.

After a stint as a freelance fashion and wardrobe stylist for both print and video, she shifted back to editorial—covering the intimate apparel and textile markets for a semi-weekly trade paper and then at BFIA, a monthly trade magazine. There, she was the top editor, managing content, writing and editing, as well as covering the markets. She helped develop a blog for the magazine, back in the early days of the ’Net, managed an annual editorial budget of $300,000 and coordinated twice-yearly runway shows.

Back to freelance: After BFIA ceased publication in 2001, she wrote for clients ranging from Liberty Travel to Visual Reference Publications (a trade magazine about retail advertising). And she started copyediting and proofreading at Ladies’ Home Journal during monthly closings. That gig led to a similar situation at Woman’s Day Specials, where her talents were recognized and appreciated and she was offered a full-time position.

As Departments Editor at Woman’s Day SIPs, Katie managed the front-of book content for 25 to 30 issues per year for a ranging of titles, including Kitchens & Baths, Remodeling & Makeovers, Budget Decorating Ideas, Walls Windows & Floors, Gardening & Deck Design and Ty Pennington at Home. She assigned and edited 20 to 30 pages per issue, sourced product and images and wrote copy. She also contributed to the planning of the editorial lineup, conceived and packaged new department ideas, and tracked costs and worked with top editors of each issue to manage budgets for front of book stories.

Since a major restructuring and staff reduction (2009 was a bad year for publishing, especially magazines), she has returned to freelancing: copyediting and proofreading as well as writing and editing.
